Magari Kochi Launch

Pappali House has stood in the heart of Kochi for over eighty years. When Magari took it on, the intention was never to replace what was there but to add a new layer to it: sunlit interiors, a considered collection, and the sense that a space can hold both memory and the present at once.

A building like that deserves a careful introduction. So when we opened the Kochi store, we wanted the opening to match the space. Unhurried. In two parts. First, editors who write about design. Then, architects and designers who practice it. Each group spent time inside Pappali House on its own terms, and what came back was less a review than a recognition: that the building and the furniture had found the right company in each other.

Three Days with the Press

Editors from Architectural Digest, GoodHomes, Living ETC, A+D Magazine, LiveMint Lounge and Ideal Home & Garden joined us for three days. We did not begin with the store. We began with the city: high tea by the backwaters, a sunset cruise with the founders, and dinner at Watson’s with voices from the editorial world.

The second day moved from sensing to making. Guests spent the morning at a tapestry weaving workshop, learning the rhythm of the loom, the patience behind pattern, the quiet intelligence of woven structure. You understand furniture differently when you’ve sat with the craft that makes it possible.

The evening brought everyone to Pappali House for the first time. A walkthrough led by the founders, followed by a six-course sit-down dinner within the store itself, each course a modern reinterpretation of Malayali cuisine, introduced by the chef. The space became the dining room. The furniture was everywhere. So was the conversation.

An Afternoon with the Architects

Later in August, Pappali House opened to the people who build India’s interiors. Architects and studios from across the country joined us for a personal walkthrough of the store; from Humming Tree and Stapati to DotAnd, Studio Avocado, Studio 3AM, Native Hands, Build Beyond and many more.

The walkthrough was unhurried. Founders were present. Questions were welcome. The collection was not presented as product but as a point of view on material, on making, on what it means to furnish a space with care.

The day closed with lunch at Watson’s, where the conversation around design philosophy, heritage and craft continued without any particular prompt. That, perhaps, was the point.
